After the radio-friendly pop of her previous four albums (which included the world wide hit 'Tapestry'), 's 'Fantasy' marked a radical change of direction for Carole King. Instead of being a collection of relatively unrelated songs, 'Fantasy' is a concept album from start to finish, addressing the social problems of urban America/5(14).

This is a handy double-CD set from England, containing Carole King's third and fifth solo albums, which originally appeared on Ode Records in America and A&M Records and Epic Records in England. They haven't upgraded the sound in any significant way (that privilege seems reserved for Tapestry), but the sound is still more than passable, and the pairing does capture two diverse sides of King 's solo work.

In fantasy I can be black or white/A woman or a man." Subsequently we are treated alternately to a series of dramatic monologues, in some of which Carole King appears as herself, voicing personal hope and aspiration, but the majority featuring her as someone else, black, Latin American or otherwise, voicing the same sentiments.
