The "original theme" from Beethoven's Op. 76 set of piano variations () is the same one that later became more famous as the "Turkish March" from the composer's incidental music to The Ruins of Athens (). The capricious, throbbing tune in its original piano form isn't obviously Turkish or a march, but it doesn't seem intended to be taken entirely seriously.

Many classical and later composers have written compositions in the form of variations on a theme by another composer.. This is an incomplete list of such works, sorted by the name of the original composer. The list does not include variations written on composers' own or original themes, or on folk, traditional or anonymous melodies.

75 rows · This is Brahms' first set of variations originally for the piano with a completely original theme composed for the work. The theme itself is so beautiful that the subsequent variations can be something of an anticlimax. Written at a time when Brahms and the violinist Joseph Joachim were exchanging counterpoint exercises through the mail, this set exhibits an older approach to variation.
